Zanon Awarded WHCA National Rookie of the Month

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pennsylvania – Penn State freshman forward Kiara Zanon was named National Rookie of the Month for December by the Women's Hockey Commissioners Association for her performance in December 2020.

The Fairport, N.Y. native has been an offensive catalyst for the Nittany Lions in their 4-1-1 start to the 2020-21 regular season. In four December games all against Syracuse, Zanon scored a pair of game-winning goals and dished out four assists for six total points.

Zanon's first game-winning score on Dec. 5 put Penn State ahead with just seconds remaining in the second period of an eventual 2-1 win over the Orange. Her second was an overtime game-winner at Syracuse Dec. 11 to cap off a season-best three-point game.

The national award for rookie of the month is the first national individual accolade received by a Nittany Lion in program history.

Zanon leads Penn State through six games with nine points (3G, 9A) and 35 shots on goal. She was named CHA Rookie of the Week for her play Nov. 30-Dec. 6.

Penn State currently stands atop the CHA standings through its first six games of the 2020-21 season. The Nittany Lions will be back on the ice this weekend, Jan. 8-9, with a road series at Robert Morris.
