UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State Women's Lacrosse team has named its captains for the 2021 season. Seniors Quinn Nicolai and Sophia Triandafils have been selected as captains by their teammates.
Nicolai and Triandafils both served as captains for the 2020 season, helping the Nittany Lions to a 5-2 start before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nicolai started all seven games last season, tallying nine goals, three assists, two groundballs, three draw controls and three caused turnovers. She led Penn State with 34 goals and ranked second on the team with 42 points in 2019. Nicolai enters the 2021 season with 64 career goals and 18 career assists. The New Jersey native is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2020 as a rehabilitation and human services major.
Triandafils collected 15 goals, seven assists, five groundballs, two caused turnovers and a draw control in her 2020 campaign. She recorded six multi-point games and five multi-goal games, while ranking 10th in the Big Ten averaging 3.14 points per game. Triandafils led PSU with 17 assists and added 24 goals in 2019. She has notched 87 career points, including 58 goals, entering the 2021 season. The communication sciences and disorders major is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and was also a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2020.
The Nittany Lions, led by Head Coach Missy Doherty, return 26 members from the 2020 squad. Penn State also welcomed nine freshmen who made up Inside Lacrosse's top 2020 recruiting class in the nation.
