UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) secured her place in the Penn State record books, but the Nittany Lions were bested by Michigan in a 5-2 loss. Smith claimed sole possession of second on the Penn State all-time singles win list with 69, moving past Jenny Schular.
Doubles
Michigan took the doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 slots.
Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Sofiya Chekhlystova (Tallinn, Estonia) came up short, losing to Jaedan Brown and Chiara Lommer, 1-6.
Karly Friedland (Hollywood, Fla.) and Smith fought hard in a comeback attempt but were defeated by Gala Mesochoritou and Kari Miller by a score of 3-6 as Michigan clinched the doubles point.
Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) and Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) left their match unfinished in a 4-5 battle against Andrea Cerdan and Alyvia Jones.
Singles
Michigan opened up singles play with a big victory as O'Gorman was defeated by Miller 2-6, 4-6 to extend the Michigan lead.
Chekhlystova pulled off an impressive victory to bring the Nittany Lions within one as she defeated #71 Cerdan in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
Michigan responded with a win of their own as Friedland lost to #101 Jones 2-6, 3-6.
The Wolverines built a 4-1 lead to clinch the match as Svarre was defeated by Lommer 2-6, 5-7.
Rohrbacher came up short against Mesochoritou 2-6, 3-6 as Michigan extended the lead to 5-1.
Smith earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Merri Kelly as she moved up to second on the all-time singles win list and brought the final score to 5-2.
