Penn State Fencing Teams Both Go 2-1 Overall on Day One In Columbus

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's and women's fencing teams competed in day one of the Ohio State Invitational, their first dual meet of the season, in Columbus, Ohio. Both teams battled against Notre Dame, Duke and North Carolina.
 
The men's team won two of their three duals. The Nittany Lions beat Duke 20-7 and North Carolina 17-10. They lost in Round 1 against Notre Dame, 8-19.
 
Ryan Griffiths (Fair Lawn, N.J.) led the men's epee squad finishing the day with a 7-2 record. In foil, Sebastiano Bicego (Vicenza, Italy) also posted a 7-2 record, going 3-0 in two of his three duals. Inti Farfan-Bayerl (Morrison, Colo.) and Clement Perrier (Allauch, France) both posted 5-4 marks in saber.

The women's team also won two of their three duals today. The Nittany Lions beat Duke 15-12 and North Carolina 19-8. Their only loss of the day also came in Round 1 against Notre Dame, 7-20.
 
In women's epee, freshman Kateryna Chorniy (Kyiv, Ukraine) made her Penn State fencing debut going undefeated against North Carolina and posting a 6-2 record. Axelle Wasiak (Vlaams-Brabant, Belgium) also went undefeated against North Carolina and finished the day with a 6-2 record.
 
Samantha Catantan (Quezon City, Philippines) went undefeated against Duke and North Carolina, posting a 7-2 record in her Penn State debut for women's foil. Lodovica Bicego (Vicenza, Italy) also had as strong 3-0 performance against North Carolina.
 
Women's saber also contributed to the women's overall success with Zara Moss (Cranberry Township, Pa.) going 3-0 against Duke.
 
At the end of day one of the Ohio State Invitational, both the men's and women's teams have a 2-1 overall record.
