UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The men's and women's fencing teams finished competing in day two of the Ohio State Invitational today. The teams fenced against Notre Dame and Ohio State. Additionally, the Penn State women's fencing team competed against Northwestern's women's team.
The men finished the day without a win, dropping their duals with Notre Dame and Ohio State.
The women won two duals while also dropping one. Their two wins came against Ohio State and Northwestern. Their one loss came against Notre Dame.
Both Nittany Lion fencing teams began day two with a pair of tough losses to Notre Dame. The men's and women's teams were defeated 6-21 and 7-20 respectively by Notre Dame in the ninth round.
After a tenth round bye, the women's team defeated rival Ohio State 16-11. Shutout performances by Kateryna Chorniy (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Axelle Wasiak (Vlaams-Brabant, Belgium) helped secure the win. Despite great efforts, the men's team narrowly lost their dual with Ohio State 11-16.
The women's team faced off against Northwestern in the 12th round to pick up their second win of the day against the Cats. Samantha Catantan (Quezon City, Philippines) had a strong foil performance going 3-0. Kateryna Chorniy (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Axelle Wasiak had back-to-back sweeps, each defeating the Cats 3-0.
At the conclusion of the two day invitational, the men's record is 2-3 and the women's record is 4-2.
The Nittany Lions will be back in action February 21 when the teams travel to Philadelphia, Pa. for another dual meet series hosted by Temple University.
