UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women's soccer team (5-1-1, 5-1-1) picked up its fifth win of the season with a 3-0 win over Minnesota (3-2-2, 3-2-2). Redshirt sophomore Ally Schlegel scored twice, and Sam Coffey scored in the victory. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Asman picked up her second shutout of the 2021 campaign.

The Nittany Lions improved to 24-5-2 all-time against Minnesota. The Nittany Lions are back in action on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET against Michigan.

How It Happened

  • On a cold and rainy night in the Nittany Lions return to Jeffrey Field, the Penn State offense looked to break the stingy Golden Gophers defense which had only allowed three goals through their first six games of the season.
  • In the 19th minute, Frankie Tagliaferri sent a ball behind the Gophers defense and Schlegel collected the pass at her feet and buried her shot into the right corner of the net to put the Nittany Lions up 1-0.
  • Just four minutes later, Schlegel scored for the fifth time in the season as Tagliaferri and Ellie Wheeler both assisted on the goal to give Penn State a 2-0 cushion.
  • The Nittany Lions led 2-0 at the half.
  • In the second stanza, the Nittany Lions added a third goal in the 74th minute. Following a foul by the Gophers just outside the box, Sam Coffey buried a free kick into the back of the net to give the Nittany Lions a 3-0 lead.
  • The Penn State defense withstood 15 shots from Minnesota in the second half. Despite the 15 shots from Minnesota, only three were on goal and Katherine Asman made all three saves.

Notes

  • Sam Coffey and Ally Schlegel are now tied for the team lead with five goals. Coffey added an assist in the game and leads PSU with 14 points and four assists.
  • Schlegel picked up her first game-winning of the season after four game-winning goals in her freshman season.
  • Katherine Asman made four saves in her second shutout of the season.
  • Ellie Wheeler picked up the first point of her Nittany Lion career with her first assist of the season.
