COLLEGE PARK, Md. - 658 days after the team's last outdoor competition, the Penn State track & field team is set to kick-off the 2021 outdoor season at the Maryland Invitational on Friday.
The Nittany Lions closed out the indoor season on a high-note, claiming three individual titles at the Big Ten Championships. Domenic Perretta and Victoria Vanriele continued Penn State's streak of 800m championships, while Sincere Rhea became the first Nittany Lion to win the indoor 60m hurdles title. Rhea and Vanriele both competed at the NCAA Championships and were named Second Team All-Americans.
As the team turns its attention to the outdoor campaign, it welcomes back two of the program's most accomplished athletes in All-Americans Danae Rivers and Maddie Holmberg. The pair completed their four years of eligibility in indoor track & field in 2020, and are set to begin their final outdoor seasons this weekend. It will mark the first collegiate competition for both athletes since the pair claimed individual gold at the 2020 Big Ten Championships. Rivers rose to national prominence in 2019 when she became the first women's indoor track & field individual champion in program history by winning the 800m indoor title.
This weekend's competition will begin on Friday with the javelin at 2 p.m. followed by the high jump and hammer throw. The remaining events take place on Saturday with competition beginning at noon.
