IOWA CITY, Iowa – Nittany Lion freshmen Karly Friedland (Hollywood, Fla.) and Alexandra Nielsen (Vancouver, BC, Canada) came away with a pair of singles wins, but it was not enough as Penn State was defeated by Iowa 5-2. The Nittany Lions move to 5-3 following Friday's decision.
Doubles
Iowa took the doubles point after wins in the No. 2 and 3 spots.
Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) and Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) lost to Iowa's tandem of Elise can Heuvelen Treadwell and Samantha Gillas in a 3-6 set.
Sofiya Chekhlystova (Talinn, Estonia) and Nielsen were narrowly defeated in a 4-6 set against Vipasha Mehra and Danielle Bauers.
Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) and Friedland left their set unfinished after trailing 4-5 against Alexa Noel and Samantha Mannix.
Singles
The Nittany Lions drew even as Nielsen dominated Mehra in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
Iowa answered right back as Svarre was bested by Mannix 3-6, 3-6.
The Hawkeyes built a 3-1 lead as Chekhlystova saw her five-match win streak come to an end against van Heuvelen Treadwell 2-6, 2-6.
Iowa clinched the match with a win at No. 1 as O'Gorman fell to #97 Noel 6-2, 6-1.
Friedland pulled the Nittany Lions closer with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Gillas.
The Hawkeyes brought the score to 5-2 as Smith was defeated by Michelle Bacalla 6-4, 7-6(4).
