UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Seniors Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) and Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) added to their impressive resumes in Penn State's 4-3 win over Minnesota on Sunday. With this victory, Penn State improves to 10-6 overall with a chance to reach double digit conference victories for the first time since the 2014-15 season with a win against Ohio State next week.
Doubles
Penn State took the early lead through wins at No. 1 and 3.
Smith and Olivia Ryan (Victoria, Australia) delivered another impressive win in a 6-1 rout of Zeyneb Sarioglan and Lucia De Santa Ana.
Sofiya Chekhlystova (Talinn, Estonia) and Alexandra Nielsen (Vancouver, B.C., Canada) were defeated by Ekin Ercetin and Juliet Zhang in a 1-6 match.
O'Gorman and Karly Friedland (Hollywood, Fla.) secured the doubles point with a strong 6-2 showing against Rachel Hanford and Dalila Said.
Singles
Chekhlystova made quick work of Ercetin in a 6-1, 6-2 match to give Penn State a 2-0 lead.
Svarre fell to Said 5-7, 1-6 as Minnesota got on the board.
Smith dominated Sarioglan 6-2, 6-0 as the Nittany Lions extended the lead to 3-1.
O'Gorman clinched the win for Penn State with an impressive 6(4)-7, 6-4, 6-4 win over #79 Hanford.
Alina Lebedeva (Moscow, Russia) was defeated by Zhang 4-6, 1-6 as Minnesota pulled within two.
Friedland lost to De Santa Ana 2-6, 6(4)-7 to bring the final score to 4-3.
