UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women's soccer program was selected as an at-large bid to the 2020-21 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament announced on Monday afternoon. Penn State will meet Alabama State in the first round of the tournament on April 28 at 7 p.m. ET, and this will be the first time the two programs have met.
Penn State finished the regular season as the Big Ten regular season champions for the 20th time in program history and enters the tournament with a 10-2-1 record.
Alabama State enters the match with an 8-2-2 record and earned the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) automatic bid by defeating Grambling State in penalty kicks in the SWAC Tournament Championship match. The Hornets also won the SWAC regular season title.
The entire tournament will be held in Cary, North Carolina and the surrounding areas. Games will be held on campus at Campbell, East Carolina and the University of North Carolina Wilmington, in addition to Bryan Park (Greensboro), J. Burt Gillette Athletic Complex (Wilson), Sportsplex (Mathews) and WakeMed Soccer Park (Cary).
Penn State is 55-23-2 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to at least the third round of the tournament each of the last three seasons. Erica Dambach has led the Nittany Lions to the College Cup twice and the national championship game in 2012 and 2015, securing Penn State's first national championship in program history in 2015.
