Four Nittany Lions Earn First Team All-North Region Honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Four Penn State women's soccer student-athletes earned All-Region honors as announced today by the United Soccer Coaches.

Senior captains Sam Coffey and Frankie Tagliaferri along with sophomore Ally Schlegel and freshman Eva Alonso all garnered first team All-North Region honors from United Soccer Coaches.

Coffey earns the second straight first team All-North region honor as a member of the Nittany Lions and the third of her career (2018 – Boston College). The Big Ten Midfielder of the Year is the NCAA active career leader in points (114) and assists (46) and is the only player in college soccer with 30+ goals (34) and 40+ assists (46). Coffey led the Big Ten in assists with 12 and was third in the NCAA. Coffey tallied six goals and finished the season with 24 points.

Tagliaferri also earns the second All-Region honor of her career as she was named to the first team All-North Region in 2018. Tagliaferri led the Big Ten in points (29) was second in goals (10) and assists (9). Her 29 points were tied for ninth in the NCAA.

Tagliaferri is the NCAA active leader in games played (90), eighth in assists (25) and 16th in points (79).

Schlegel earned her second consecutive All-North region honor after being named the Big Ten Forward of the Year. Schlegel was also recently named a semifinalist for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy. She led the Big Ten in goals for the second year in a row and was tied for 10th in the NCAA in goals (11) and 11th in points (28).

Freshman Eva Alonso, the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Year, anchored the back line for Penn State. Alonso started and played nearly every minute for the Nittany Lions at center back. With Alonso as the staple of the defense in front of Katherine Asman, Penn State held opponents to just 14 goals and sported a 0.86 goal against average with seven shutouts on the season.

With the four most recent first team All-Region honorees, Penn State has now collected 71 first team All-Region honors in its 27-year program history.

First team all-region honorees are now eligible for All-America status which will be announced on Thursday, May 13.
