CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Championship season begins this week for the Penn State track & field team as the Nittany Lions travel to Illinois for the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The meet is scheduled to begin Friday and run through Sunday when conference champions will be crowned. This will be the first Big Ten Outdoor Championship meet since 2019 after the event was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Nittany Lions enter the meet with 13 athletes ranked in the top five in the conference in their respective events, with Danae Rivers ranking first in the women's 1500m run, Kathryn Munks ranking first in the women's 10,000m run and Mark Porter ranking first in the men's javelin throw.
Penn State closed out the regular season at home last Friday at the Jim Thorpe Invite with several field athletes highlighting the event. Katie Jones and Hailey Zurich both set a new outdoor program record with pole vaults of 4.13 meters (13-6.5). Lucciano Pizarro recorded Penn State's biggest shot put throw of the year, clearing his personal best by over a meter with a mark of 18.63 (61-1.5). The throw ranked ninth in program history.
After the meet, the team honored 10 Nittany Lions with a Senior Day ceremony. The group included William Ashenfelter, Yasmin Brooks, Maddie Holmberg, Audra Koopman, David Lucas, Kathryn Munks, Ben Peterson, Mark Porter, Danae Rivers and Brooke-Lynn Williams.
