Three Nittany Lions Named Scholar All-Americans

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Penn State men's soccer student-athletes Brandon Hackenberg, Seth Kuhn and Pierre Reedy were all named to the Scholar All-America Team, as announced by United Soccer Coaches Thursday afternoon.

Redshirt seniors Hackenberg and Reedy, both in graduate programs at Penn State, were named to the first team while junior Kuhn was honored on the second team.


All three student-athletes were also named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Region Team before earning All-America status.

Hackenberg becomes a First Team Scholar All-American after two-straight spots on the Scholar All-Region Team, the first in the 2019 season. The defender from Palmyra, Va., is a four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, and was a candidate for the 2020-21 Senior CLASS Award. On the pitch this season, Hackenberg earned first team All-Big Ten honors as well as first team All-North Region honors from United Soccer Coaches. Hackenberg graduated with his undergraduate degree in Advertising/Public Relations in December 2020 and is currently working on a Graduate Certificate in Business Management Foundations.

Reedy continues to pile on the awards this season, becoming a First Team Scholar All-American for the first time in his career. The midfielder from Kutztown, Pa., is four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a 2018-19 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. In 2020-21, he has also been named to the All-Big Ten First Team, the Big Ten All-Tournament Team, first team All-North Region, and most significantly, a third team All-American. Reedy graduated with his undergraduate degree in Security & Risk Analysis in May 2020 and his Masters in Corporate Finance in May 2021.

Kuhn earned a spot as a Second Team Scholar All-American for the first time in his career. The midfielder from Wyomissing, Pa., received Academic All-Big Ten honors in fall 2020, as well as athletic honors in second team All-Big Ten and second team All-North Region. Kuhn is majoring in Communication Arts & Sciences.

The three Nittany Lions become the program's first Scholar All-Americans from United Soccer Coaches, formerly known as National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), since David Walters in 2004.

To be eligible for Scholar All-America recognition, student-athletes must have had a cumulative 3.40 GPA or better throughout career, started more than 50 percent of all games (minimum seven) during the season of nomination, be an elite player as supported by playing honors and/or contributions to their team, and be a junior or above in academic standing.
