Griffin Wins Maryland State Open

LUTHERVILLE, Md. – Penn State men's golf incoming freshman Jake Griffin continues to impress this summer, most recently capturing the Maryland State Open title Wednesday afternoon.

Griffin, a Kensington, Md. native, finished the three-round event at 3-under, 207 total to claim the Maryland State Open championship at Baltimore Country Club's Five Farms East Course. Griffin's outing was highlighted by a 4-under, 66, in Tuesday's second round, the second-lowest single-round score in the entire field of competitors. He shot an even 70 in the first round and a 1-over, 71, in the third and final round Wednesday to finish at a 207 seven total, two strokes ahead of the second-place finisher. Griffin's title had him finishing atop the field that included the past three Maryland Amateur Champions.

The Five Farms East Course is one of two courses at the Baltimore Country Club, which is ranked as the best golf course in Maryland by Golf.com and has hosted a number of USGA events.

Griffin's Maryland State Open title comes just over two weeks after he qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Pinehurst that is set to be played from July 19-24.

Griffin, along with fellow incoming freshman Morgan Lofland, inked a National Letter of Intent in November 2020 and will enroll and compete at Penn State beginning in August 2021.
