PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – Penn State men's golf rising junior Patrick Sheehan has put together an outstanding summer on the links, most recently highlighted by qualifying for both the U.S. Amateur Championship and Pennsylvania Open within a three-day span this week.
Sheehan punched his ticket to the U.S. Amateur Championship, to be played Aug. 9-15 at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club, by carding an impressive 9-under, 135 total at Sunnybrook Golf Club Wednesday to finish first amongst the qualifying field. Sheehan joins Penn State classmate Jimmy Meyers as qualifiers to compete at the 121st-annual U.S. Amateur Championship, to be played from Aug. 9-15 at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club. Qualifiers continue at a total of 92 sites across the country throughout the remainder of July.
The outstanding U.S. Amateur qualifying performance came just two days after Sheehan, a Doylestown, Pa. native, fired a 6-under, 66 total at the Pennsylvania Open qualifier at Indian Valley Country Club Monday. He finished atop the field of competitors to advance to the 105th Pennsylvania Open Championship to be held at Philadelphia Cricket Club (Wissahickon) on August 10-12.
Sheehan has also seen success earlier in the summer with notable results including finishing tied for third at the 117th Golf Association of Philadelphia Open at the Country Club of York and 16th at the Eastern Amateur played at Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club. He also was a medalist in the Jay Seigel Match Play Championship, scoring 11-under over the 36 holes. He was seeded No. 1 and went on to win three matches before dropping the championship match.
The historic Oakmont Country Club, the site of this year's U.S. Amateur Championship, has hosted more combined USGA and PGA championships than any other course in the United States., including nine U.S. Opens, five U.S. Amateurs, three PGA Championships, and two U.S. Women's Opens. Golf Digest ranks Oakmont No. 5 in its most recent version of America's Top 100 courses.
