UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. –The Penn State Women's Tennis team wrapped up day one of fall tournament play at the Hokie Fall Invite hosted by Virginia Tech and the Wahoowa Invitational hosted by the University of Virginia. The tournaments will continue to run until the end of the weekend.
Wahoowa Invitational
Singles
In singles competition, the Nittany lions started the season strong with wins from both Deanna Lasorda and Sofiya Chekhiystova. Freshman Deanna Lasorda collected her first colligate win over North Carolina State's Amelia Rajecki in a 7-5, 6-3 match. Sofiya Chekhiystova defeated Sara Nayar of North Carolina States in a 6-4, 6-0 match.
Senior, Olivia Ryan battled to a tough three-set loss to Anastasia Astakhova of Auburn in a 7-6, 6-7, 10-8 match.
Doubles
Penn State came out strong to start the season in doubles matches. Sara Nayar and Sofiya Chekhiystova defeated Sophie Abrams and Alexandra Nielson of Penn State in a 6-1match.
Olivia Ryan and Gabrielle O'Gorman fell in a close match to Old Dominion's duo of Maria Alcaide and Alexandra Viktorovich, 5-7.
Hokie Fall Invitational
Singles
In the singles competition, the Nittany Lions continued to fight on earning several wins for the teams opening fall tournament. In the first round of tournament play Nina Stankovska defeated James Madison Universities Natalia Nikolopoulou. Stankovska collected another win in the second round over East Tennessee State's Alejandra Morales.
Alina Lebedeva collected a win over Virginia Tech's Erika Cheng in the first round of play. In the second round Lebedeva fought to secure another win over Malin Falk of Radford University.
Sydney Weinberg picked up two wins for the day. The first by defeating Chinda Som of Virginia Tech and the second by default.
Doubles
The Nittany Lions started off doubles play strong with two match wins. Duo Karly Friedland and Yvonna Zuffova fought to victory over West Virginia's Gaya Soloman and Tuva Wallin. The Penn State duo won the match 8-2.
Sydney Weinberg and Gracey Hirsch defeated Liberty's duo of Elsa Kirch and Eliose Saraty.
