Pillado and Nonnenberg Join Nittany Lion Coaching Staff

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State Swimming and Diving program and head coach Tim Murphy are excited to announce the addition of two new assistant coaches, Austin Pillado and Mia Nonnenberg, to the program. Demetris Ogburn also joined the staff as Director of Operations.

"I am extremely excited to welcome Mia and Austin to the Nittany Lion Family," said Coach Tim Murphy. "With their background as student-athletes and their coaching experience, they will make a significant impact on our student-athletes and our program. They both have the knowledge, skills and passion that are important to help grow and take our team to the next level."

"I want to thank Coach Murphy and Penn State University for this incredible opportunity to contribute towards the rich traditions of the swimming and diving program," said Nonnenberg. "I am truly honored to be returning to my home state as a member of the coaching staff and I feel so fortunate to be working with, and learning from, the outstanding coaches, while helping the student-athletes reach their full potential."

Nonnenberg comes to Happy Valley after spending last season as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University. During her time at Eastern Michigan, Nonnenberg helped to develop training plans, helped with recruiting and coordinated all team travel.

She was an NCAA All-American, four-time SEC Academic Honor Roll student, and 2016 Olympic Trial qualifier and top-20 finisher in 400 IM and 200 Butterfly. She graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.

After graduation, Nonnenberg was a volunteer assistant coach for Alabama, where she earned a Master of Science in Physical Education and Human Performance.

"I would like to thank Coach Murphy and the hiring committee at Penn State for this amazing opportunity," said Pillado. "I am looking forward to working with this dynamic coaching staff and program. The ceiling is very high for these student-athletes and I can't wait to help Penn State swimming and diving climb their way to the top."

Pillado comes to Happy Valley after spending time as an assistant coach at Saginaw Valley State from 2020-21. Pillado assisted in running daily training sessions and spearheading recruiting efforts.

Pillado coached five Olympians and multiple national team swimmers, from various countries, during the 2017-2020 tenure.
