LAST TIME OUT
- Playing man-down for nearly 70 minutes, the Nittany Lions fell on the road to West Virginia, 3-1, Friday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
- Junior defender Jalen Watson received his second yellow card of the match in the 23rd minute which in turn becomes a red card and would put Penn State man-down for the remainder of the match.
- The Mountaineers went up 1-0 in the 34th minute and added a second goal off a corner kick in the 53rd minute to make it 2-0.
- Penn State refused to give up, however, taking advantage of the seemingly cruise control mindset West Virginia went in to and getting within one in the 83rd minute with the first career goal by sophomore defender Femi Awodesu who followed through on a handful of shot-saves in the box to get the Nittany Lions on the board.
- From there, Penn State took some risks offensively to try to find the equalizer, ultimately letting the home team's counterattack add another goal in the 89th minute on a breakaway for the final scoreline.
- Junior goalkeeper Kris Shakes tied his season high with six saves.
SCOUTING AMERICAN
- The American Eagles are led by third-year head coach Zach Samol. The Eagles are 1-1-0 to start the season, coming off a 1-0 loss against Santa Clara on Friday.
- Freshmen classmates Zemi Rodriguez and Dilane Zouantcha are the goal scorers for the Eagles so far this season with a goal each. Senior David Coly, the Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, leads the team with two assists.
- In net, sophomore goalkeeper Lorenzo Gordon holds a 1.00 goals-against average and a 0.800 save percentage with eight total saves.
- American is the defending Patriot League Champions from a season ago, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles advanced on penalty kicks, 5-4, over Jacksonville in the first round before falling to No. 1 overall seed Clemson, 2-1, in the second round.
PENN STATE AGAINST AMERICAN
- Penn State and American are tied in the all-time series at 2-2-0.
- The two teams last met up at the beginning of the 2011 season in the Penn State Classic where the Nittany Lions picked up a 2-0 victory.
