University Park, Pa. - The Nittany Lion men's fencing team competed in the second day of competition at the 2021 Temple Open, finishing the first meet of the season in Philadelphia.
Men's foil finished the day with freshman Donavyn Martinez (Fresno, Calif.) going 3-1 in elimination action, sophomore Konner Paik (Norwood, N.J.) ending 1-1, and freshman Caiden Cannon (Gahanna, Ohio) going 0-1.
In men's epee, Mitchel Bekker (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Daniel Shifron (Pittsburgh, Pa.) each went 3-1. Stafford Moosekian (Los Angeles, Calif.) finished 1-1. Bekker placed fifth in the final overall individual standings.
Penn State had three fencers competing in the saber. Clement Perrier (Allauch, France) went 3-1 as did Jeffrey Basalyga (Saddle River, N.J.). Both athletes advanced to the quarterfinals before falling in elimination action. Freshman Carlos Fernando Chacon (La Paz, Bolivia) went 0-1 in his first collegiate action.
