Women’s Soccer Captains Earn All-Big Ten Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The three captains of the Penn State women's soccer team earned All-Big Ten honors as announced by the league on Thursday afternoon. Senior's Kerry Abello and Sam Coffey earned first team All-Big Ten honors and Ally Schlegel was named second team All-Big Ten.
 
Coffey and Abello earn the 78th and 79th first team All-Big Ten honors in program history, the most of all Big Ten institutions.
 
Coffey earns her third consecutive first team All-Big Ten of her career. Coffey has been named to the first team in all three of her seasons as a Nittany Lion. The senior from Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. leads the Nittany Lions with eight goals, six assists and 22 points. Coffey leads the NCAA active leaders with 52 assists and ranks second in points with 136 in 98 games. Coffey has scored 42 goals in her five seasons of competition. Coffey has recorded 28 assists as a Nittany Lions which ties her for eighth all-time at Penn State with Emily Hurd and Raquel Rodriguez.
 
Abello earns her second, first team All-Big Ten honor of her Nittany Lion career. Abello was a first team All-Big Ten honoree in 2019. Abello has earned three All-Big Ten honors as a Nittany Lion. Abello displayed her versatility as she was named to the first team as a defender in 2021 and as a midfielder in 2019. Abello has scored two goals and added an assist playing primarily on the back line for the Nittany Lions. Abello has appeared in 91 games for Penn State in her career with 69 starts. Abello was also named the recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, the second time she has earned the honor. 
 
Schlegel earns her third consecutive All-Big Ten honor with her latest honor being to the second team. Schlegel tied for the Big Ten lead with four game-winning goals this season. Schlegel netted six goals this season an added three assists. Schlegel was a first team All-Big Ten honoree in both 2019 and 2020-21 and was a unanimous selection in 2020-21. Schlegel has scored 30 goals and added 16 assists in her first 58 games at Penn State. Of Schlegel's 30 goals, 11 of them are game-winners.
 
Penn State travels to Michigan for the quarterfinal matchup of the Big Ten Tournament against Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 31.
