Women's Basketball Battles Delaware State On Tuesday


UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women's basketball team welcomes Delaware State in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. inside the Bryce Jordan Center.

The Lady Lions, led by head coach Carolyn Kieger, are off to a 2-0 start after wins over LIU (85-66) and Rider (83-69) last week.

PARKING
All Penn State Athletics non-football events will require a valid permit or payment of the applicable parking fee for campus lots. Complimentary parking will no longer be issued for season ticket holders.
 
Fans with valid Penn State University Park parking permits will be permitted to park at non-football athletics events for free, following Transportation Services parking policies and access.
 
Fans without a permit are encouraged to prepay for event parking at a discounted rate through ParkMobile - https://psu.parkmobile.io/. Prepayment is available through 11:59 p.m. the day prior to each event. Season packages will be available for general parking for most sports, and information on VIP parking options available for select events will be released later.

  • Delaware State is led by head coach E.C. Hill is in her first season as head coach.
  • Hill served the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Towson.
  • The Hornets dropped their first two games of the 2021-22 campaign against Stony Brook (87-46) and Hampton (51-36).
  • Against Hampton, redshirt senior Kiana Coomber led the Hornets with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Sianny Sanchez-Oliver added 10 points.

 
AGAINST THE HORNETS

  • Penn State earned a 110-48 in the only previous meeting between the teams on February 19, 1985.

 
LAST TIME OUT

  • The Lady Lions benefitted from three players scoring 20+ points in an 83-69 win over Rider.
  • Ali Brigham paced the blue and white with 23 points of 11-of-13 shooting while adding six rebounds and six assists.
  • Makenna Marisa poured in 20 points, hitting four three-pointers, while Niya Beverley scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds.
  • It marked the first time Penn State had three 20+ scorers in a game since December 7, 2014 vs. Wagner.

BRIGHAM'S IMPRESSIVE START

  • Sophomore forward Ali Brigham made a big impact in her first game as a Lady Lion, vs. LIU, after transferring from George Washington, scoring 20 points and tallying nine rebounds and three blocks.
  • She followed that with a 23-point performance against Rider, shooting 11-of-13 from the floor.
  • Brigham is the first Lady Lion to score 20+ points in the first two games of a season since Brianna Banks in 2015.
  • Through the first week of the season, Brigham ranks eighth in the Big Ten in points per game (21.5), 10th in rebounds per game (7.5) and eighth in assists (8).
  • She sits ninth in the nation, and second in the conference, in field goals made with 19.

 
MARISA DOING IT ALL

  • Junior guard Makenna Marisa filled up the box score in the season opener vs. LIU with 19 points, six rebounds and six assists.
  • She had 20 points against Rider, nailing four three-pointers.
  • Marisa holds second in the Big Ten in three-pointers made (7), first in three-pointers attempted (16), fourth in field goals made (15), eighth in assists (8) and 11th in points per game (19.5).

 
SHARING AND SHOOTING

  • The Lady Lions assisted on 20 of 30 made field goals against LIU and 21 of 33 makes against Rider.
  • Penn State had 20+ assists in back-to-back games for the first time since 2020 (vs. Maryland and Iowa).
  • Penn State has scored 80+ points in back-to-back games to start the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, marking the first time Penn State has done that in consecutive seasons since 1993-94 and 1994-95.
  • The Lady Lions pace the Big Ten in three-pointers made (19) and attempted (50).

NON-CONFERENCE SLATE

  • Penn State opened its 11-game non-conference slate against LIU.
  • The Lady Lions' first three contests will be played at the Bryce Jordan Center against LIU (11/9), Rider (11/11) and Delaware State (11/16).
  • Penn State's non-con continues at Clemson on Sunday, November 21. The Tigers reached the 2021 WNIT Second Round.
  • The Lady Lions then travel to the Gulf Coast Showcase in Florida. Penn State will open the tournament against St. John's on November 26.
  • On November 27, Penn State will face either Iowa State or Charlotte in the Gulf Coast Showcase. Iowa State was a 2021 NCAA Tournament team, while Charlotte was a 2021 WNIT participant.
  • Penn State takes on Boston College in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Thursday, December 2.
  • The non-conference schedule closes out with home games against Youngstown State (12/12) and Towson (12/22) and a road matchup at Duquesne (12/18).

 
STRENGTH OF THE BIG TEN

  • The AP Poll features five Big Ten teams: No. 3 Maryland, No. 4 Indiana, No. 8 Iowa, No. 13 Michigan and No. 21 Ohio State. Michigan State is among teams receiving votes.
  • Penn State opens Big Ten play at Indiana on December 6.
  • The Lady Lions played 10 ranked opponents in 2020-21, the most among Big Ten schools, and earned a 69-67 win over No. 15 Ohio State on February 24, 2021.
