Nittany Lions roar into Sweet 16 with South Carolina

LOS ANGELES, Ca. – The Penn State women's soccer program is set for their 18th overall appearance in the NCAA Third Round as they face South Carolina on Sunday afternoon.
 
Penn State has advanced to at least the third round for the past five consecutive seasons and in seven out of the last eight seasons.
 
It will be the second overall meeting between the Nittany Lions and the Gamecocks, with PSU winning their lone previous matchup 1-0 in the NCAA Second Round in 2018. 
 
The winner of Sunday's match will advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals and face the winner of No. 13 BYU and No. 2 Virginia.

Penn State upset No. 11 and third-seeded Southern California in the NCAA Tournament Second Round on Friday. The Nittany Lions drew their first match of the season 2-2 vs USC but advanced to the third round after winning the penalty kick shootout 5-3. Ally Schlegel scored both goals for the Nittany Lions with assists from Kerry Abello and Sam Coffey. Goalkeeper Katherine Asman made a career high 11 saves.
 
Regular Season in Review
PSU faced a strong schedule having the No. 20 RPI among NCAA programs. The Nittany Lions finished the regular season with double digit wins (11-6-0)- a feat that has been accomplished every season in program history. Highlighting the regular season were four wins over ranked opponents — No. 13 West Virginia, No. 3 Virginia, No. 18 Wisconsin, and No. 19 Purdue.

Last time vs. South Carolina (Nov. 16, 2018)
In their first and only match with the Gamecocks, No. 14 Penn State shut out No. 18 South Carolina 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament Second Round in Morgantown, WV. Kristin Schnurr scored the lone goal of the match in the 31st minute. Penn State outshot South Carolina, 24-5 with Kerry Abello taking 8 of those shots. That season PSU went 18-6-1 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals before falling to 1-0 to eventual national champions Florida State.

This is the Penn State women's soccer program's 27th straight trip to the NCAA tournament and 18th overall appearance in the Sweet 16. 
 
PSU is 12-4-1 in third round matches and has shut out their opponent 10 times in the Sweet 16.
 
Penn State is 58-24-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to at least the third round of the tournament for five consecutive seasons and in seven out of the last eight seasons.
 
Erica Dambach has led the Nittany Lions to the College Cup twice and the national championship game in 2012 and 2015, securing Penn State's first national championship in program history in 2015.
