Cali, Columbia — Three Penn State men's swimmers competed in the first Junior Pan American Games held this past weekend in Cali, Columbia.
Freshmen Victor Baganha and Eduardo Moraes represented Brazil while senior Carlos Vasquez represented Honduras.
Highlights included Baganha helping team Brazil to a gold medal in the 4x100 freestyle relay with an overall time of 3:17.14. They had a seven second lead over second place Mexico who swam in 03:24.02.
Individually, Moraes brought home the silver medal in the 400 free finishing in 03:53.23. His time in the final race was only surpassed by a tenth of a second by a representative of Colombia, whose total time was 03:53.14.
Vasquez qualified for the 200 butterfly finals, finishing first in his heat for the preliminaries with a time of 02:03.56. He shaved off several tenths of a second and finished in fourth place in the finals with a time of 02:03.18.
More than 3,500 athletes between the ages of 14 and 22 compete in 27 sports in the Junior Pan American Games with qualification for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.
This is the first Junior Pan American Games, which was born out of the Pan American Games that have been held every four years since 1957. Cali, Columbia hosted the sixth version of them in 1971.
