ABU DHABI — Penn State swimmer senior Carlos Vasquez broke multiple Honduras national records during the 15th FINA World Swimming Championships from Dec. 16-17 in the Etihad Arena.
From Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and representing Honduras, Vasquez set new national short course records in the 50, 100 and 200 butterfly at the World Championships.
He now holds 10 total Honduras records including the short course 200 backstroke, 200 and 400 individual medleys, and long course records in the 400, 800, 1500 freestyle, and the 50 butterfly.
On Thursday, Dec. 16, Vasquez started competition in the 200 fly placing second in his heat with a time of 1:58.41, 00.39 seconds behind the leader of his heat. He broke the Honduras record of 1:59.99 previously set by Javier Hernandez at the 2010 World Championships.
The next day, Vasquez would again break a record previously set by Hernandez in the 2010 World Championships. Vasquez won his heat in the 100 fly in 53.91, besting Hernandez's record by 1.8 seconds.
En route to his final mark, Vasquez would also beat Hernandez's 50 fly time, swimming it in 24.95, an improvement of .25 of a second.
The 15th FINA Short Course World Championships featured over 1000 athletes representing over 180 nationalities.
Several of Vasquez's records were set at the 2016 World Championships held in Windsor, Canada including his national records in the short course 200 back, 200 and 400 individual medleys.
Vasquez is now looking forward to qualifying for the 19th FINA World Championships held in Fukuoka, Japan in May 2022 and the Central American and Caribbean Games to be held in Nov. 2022.
