Penn State Opens Indoor Season at Bison Opener

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Penn State track & field team opened the 2021-22 indoor campaign when the team traveled to Bucknell for the Bison Opener on Friday and Saturday.

The weekend kicked off with an impressive Penn State debut by Chloe Royce. The Maryland transfer won four of five events in the pentathlon, setting personal bests in both the 60m (8.88) and the shot put (10.16m). Her 3773 score was the highest of her collegiate career.

The Nittany Lions competed in several field events on Saturday, claiming six event victories with several personal bests. Among those with strong season openers was Mallory Kauffman, who won the women's shot put with an indoor best throw of 15.97m while also setting a PR in the weight throw (16.45m) in a third place finish. Fellow thrower Tom Bojalad won the men's weight throw with a personal best 17.06m toss.

It was a strong day for the Penn State jumpers, as Nittany Lions took the top three spots in the women's high jump (Cecelia Bacon, Carlie Wilson and Kate Willshaw) and two spots in the men's pole vault (Luke Knipe and Dan Dean). Breana Gambrell and Tesia Thomas placed first and second in both the long jump and triple jump, with Thomas setting personal bests in both events (long jump – 5.72m and triple jump – 12.06m).

Penn State returns to action in January when the team opens the new year with three home meets beginning with the Nittany Lion Challenge on Jan. 15.
