University Park, Pa. - The Penn State Nittany Lion fencing teams traveled to Fairfield, Conn. this weekend to participate in the Sacred Heart Invitational at Sacred Heart University on Sunday, Dec. 5. The team took on other collegiate fencing teams including New York University, Harvard University, Princeton University, Vassar College, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology in the first dual meet of the season.
The men's team went 5-1. Penn State beat NYU 16-11, Harvard 14-13, NJIT 18-9, Sacred Heart 16-11, and Vassar 20-7. They were defeated 14-13 by Princeton.
The women's team also had a successful day going 4-2. The Nittany Lions downed NYU 14-13, NJIT 22-5, Sacred Heart 21-6, and Vassar 16-11. The women were defeated by Harvard 14-12 and Princeton 22-5.
The team will be back in action later this week with select athletes competing at the Olympic Trials in Columbus, Ohio, Dec. 9-12.
