UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – After last season's conference-only matchups, the Penn State women's tennis team returns to a full spring slate as the 2022 spring schedule has been announced.
"We are so excited for the 2022 spring season," said head coach Alexandra Anghelescu. "We had a great run last year, now we get the chance to prove ourselves again but with non-conference opponents. Ronit and I built our schedule to give our student-athletes the opportunities that Penn State has not had in a very long time in playing universities that have been or are ranked in the top 50. The team has worked so hard these past few months and we couldn't be more proud of where they are and the foundation/legacy that they are building here at Penn State. We can't wait to see what else this team has, as we keep climbing to our potential."
The Nittany Lions open the spring season at home against St. John's on January 14. The season opener will be the first of 10 home matches and the Penn State schedule also features 12 away matches.
Penn State returns eight players from a season ago, including graduate student Gabby O'Gorman who returns after earning All-Big Ten honors last season. The Nittany Lions added three first-year students to this year's roster and are coming off a strong fall 2021 season.
Penn State's 2021 spring slate is highlighted by three matches against current top 25 teams including Kentucky (February 13), Ohio State (March 4) and Michigan (April 3). The match against the Buckeyes will be the first of 11 Big Ten duals.
The season opener against St. John's (Jan. 14) will be the first of five January matches for the Nittany Lions. Penn State will also host West Virginia (Jan. 21) and Bucknell (Jan. 28) while also traveling to Old Dominion (Jan. 16) and Syracuse (Jan. 23).
February will be spent on the road, with Penn State traveling to take on James Madison (Feb. 5), Xavier (Feb. 13) and Kentucky (Feb. 13).
The Nittany Lions return home on March 4 to open Big Ten play against Ohio State before closing out that weekend homestand against non-conference foe Penn on March 6. Penn State will spend the rest of the month away from home, beginning with a trip to North Carolina to face East Carolina (March 11) and UNCW (March 12). The Nittany Lions return to Big Ten action on March 18 and 20 when Penn State travels to Nebraska and Iowa.
