Women's Hockey Downed By Cornell

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women's hockey team suffered a 6-1 loss in nonconference action to Cornell Tuesday afternoon at Pegula Ice Arena.

Senior Natalie Heising (Wayzata, Minn.) scored the lone goal for the Nittany Lions with assists to freshman defender Karley Garcia (Roseville, Calif.) and Izzy Heminger (Dublin, Ohio).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both penalty kills looked strong in the opening period as both teams stalled one opposing power play each in the period. Cornell, however, was fortunate enough to score shorthanded to take the early lead.

Izzy Daniel scooped up a turnover in the Penn State end and scored at 4:41 to give the Big Red the initial lead which they held going into the first period.

The Nittany Lions mustered a good initial repones in the second period with the tying score. Garcia's shot from the right wall split two Cornell defenders and Heising got a stick on it to tip it into the net with 17:08 to play in the second period.

However from there, Cornell had control of the second period with three unanswered scores. Alexa Davis gave the Big Red the lead again at 11:08 in the period, followed up two minutes later by Claudia Yu.

Lily Deliandedis scored with 51 seconds left in the second period to give Cornell the 4-1 lead heading into the second break.

That momentum continued for the Big Red as they added two more early in the third period. Ashley Messier scored from above the left circle with 11:53 remaining, followed up a few moments later by a Rory Guilday goal to make it 6-1.
