Nittany Lions Women's Tennis Prepares To Host West Virginia and Travel to Syracuse

University Park, Pa. – Penn State women's tennis (0-1) will host its first home match on Friday, Jan. 21 against West Virginia (0-0) at 4 p.m. The Nittany Lions will continue their weekend facing Syracuse (1-0) on the road Sunday, Jan 23 at 11 a.m. 

  
"After having a tough match on the road, it is great to get a match at home against another good opponent," said head Coach Alex Anghelescu. "We learned a lot from this past weekend and are ready to take the next step to keep building to our goals. With such a young team, every match we are learning more how to handle pressure, maintain emotions and heighten our energy. I'm excited to see what the team brings this weekend." 

Last Time Out 

Penn State fell last Sunday in its season opener against Old Dominion. 


In doubles play, Olivia Ryanand Yvonne Zuffova battled Marina Alcaide and Shahar Biran in a class match, but untimely fell 6-3 in the end. In the No. 1 singles bout, Sofiya Chekhlystova battled in a three-set defeat.  


Two Nittany Lion first-year students, Alina Lebedva and Yvonne Zuffova each made their college debuts in singles action.  


Scouting the Mountaineers

West Virginia will open its spring season at University Park on Friday.  

The Mountaineers finished 3-6 in a shortened 2021 season. Four players return from last season's team.   

Inside the Orange 

Syracuse opened its season strong last weekend beating Army, 6-1. The Orange swept Army in doubles play and controlled singles play and clinching five of the six singles matches.  

Syracuse is set to host Brown on Saturday at the Sky Top Tennis Courts before facing Penn State on Sunday.  

The match will be streamed through the ACC Network extra and announced by Brad Klein and Cameron Ezeir. 

NEXT UP 

The Nittany Lions host Bucknell Friday, Jan. 28 at 5 p.m. before beginning a string of three away matches throughout February.
