Brooks, Merkley Highlight First Day of National Open

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Competition began Friday at the Penn State National Open with several Nittany Lions in action on the meet's first day.
 
For the second week in a row, seniors Yasmin Brooks and Tyler Merkley recorded performances that rank in the program's all-time top five.
 
A week after recording the third best weight throw in Penn State history, Merkley matched his career-best throw with a toss of 21.17m.
 
Brooks bested her performance from a week ago, winning the women's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.23. It ranks as the fifth best time in program history. Ekaterina Hupalo also recorded a PR in the race with a time of 8.44 to place third.
 
Two other Nitany Lions recorded wins on the day, with Luke Knipe recording a season best 5.10m to win the men's pole vault and Wesley Matsuka-Williams winning the men's triple jump (14.97m).
 
Competition will resume on Saturday beginning with field events at noon. Track events will be streamed on Big Ten Plus beginning at 1:40 p.m.
