UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women's tennis (1-1) defeated West Virginia University, 5-2, in its first home match of the season on Friday afternoon.
"It felt really good to be able to play back on our home court," said Alina Lebedeva. "The energy from my teammates and crowd really helped us out. I am happy with our win and looking forward to the match against Syracuse.
Doubles
The Nittany Lions secured the doubles point to jump start the match with an early 1-0 lead.
Duo Gabby O'Gorman and Sofiya Chekhlystova secured their first doubles victory of the season, 6-3, over West Virginia's Michaela Kucharova and Camilla Bossi.
On court No. 3, duo Olivia Ryan and Yvonne Zuffova collected a win over West Virginia's Anastasia Bovolskaia, 6-2, to secure the doubles point.
Singles
Freshman, Yvonne Zuffova collects her first singles win of the season against West Virginia's Anastasia Bovolskaia. Zuffova shut out Bovolskaia in both sets (6-0, 6-,0) to earn Penn State's first singles point.
Sofiya Chekhylstova earned a win over Momoko Nagato in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
Gabby O'Gorman battled through a tough three-set match against Ting-Pei Chang of West Virginia. O'Gorman fell 6-2 in the first set, powered through the second set defeating Chang 6-3. O'Gorman secured the victory and clinched the match for Penn State with a 6-3 win in the third set.
Alina Lebedeva earned a hard-fought victory over West Virginia's Camila Bossi, 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (6).
