UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women's tennis (2-1) defeated Syracuse University, 5-2, earning its first road win of the season.
"I am very happy with how the team played today. We knew it was not going to be easy, but everyone succeeded in giving their 100 percent," said Sofiya Chekhlystova. "I think I played well in both singles and doubles and can't wait to get more wins beside my friends!"
Doubles
The Nittany Lions took the doubles point with wins on courts one and two.
Partners Karly Friedland and Alexandra Nielsen secured a win on court one over Syracuse's Polina Kozyreva and Sofya Treshcheva, 6-2.
On court No. 2, duo Sofiya Chekhlystova and Gabby O'Gorman defeated Miyuka Kimoto/Shiori Ito of Syracuse, 6-4, earning Penn State a 1-0 lead.
Singles
Freshman, Yvonne Zuffova defeated Syracuse's Miyuka Kimoto in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to give the Nittany Lion their first singles point.
Gabby O'Gorman earned a victory over Sofya Treshcheva of Syracuse, 6-1, 6-0 on court No. 3.
Sofiya Chekhlystova extended the Nittany Lions lead to 4-1 with a victory over Viktoria Kanapatskaya, 6-2, 6-2.
In a tough battle, Alexandra Nielsen defeated Syracuse's Ines Fonte in the first set, 7-6 (7-3.) Nielsen fell 6-7 (0-7) in the second set. In the final set Nielsen earned a tiebreaker victory, 1-0 (10-3.)
