UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Senior Dan Reaume scored a career-high four goals, but Penn State men's lacrosse dropped to 1-2 on the season with a 16-10 loss to visiting Vermont on Wednesday at Panzer Stadium. The Catamounts, the defending champions in the America East and a NCAA Tournament qualifier last season, improved to 1-2 overall.
Vermont controlled possession for the majority of the game, winning 21 of 30 faceoffs and taking 67 shots to Penn State's 31. Tommy Burke did the damage at the faceoff X for the Catamounts. The first team All-America East selection took all 30 faceoffs. He was helped by Nick Alviti with eight ground balls.
Junior goalie Aleric Fyock was busy on the day, making 15 saves. He was 50 percent in the game as one of the goals was an empty-net score.
Reaume's four goals came on six shots. He was joined in the scoring column by Jeb Brenfleck, Jack Kelly, Will Peden, Mark Sickler, Jack Traynor and Jake Morin with one goal apiece. Traynor added three assists to give him four points on the day and 14 through three games on the season. Peden tallied two assists, while Kyle Aldridge had one.
Liam Limoges struck first for Vermont, scoring 2:57 into the game, and went on to lead all players with five goals. Brock Haley matched Limoges's point total with two goals and three points. David Closterman had a hat trick with three goals.
Penn State's defensive effort led to 16 Vermont turnovers. Brett Funk caused two turnovers, while Grant Haus, Brenfleck, Brian Townsend, Hudson Bohn, and Kevin Parnham each caused one. Haus added four ground balls.
Vermont led 11-5 before Penn State made one final comeback attempt. The Lions went on a 4-0 run with goals by Brenfleck, Morin, Reaume and Sickler in a span of less than seven minutes to get within two, 11-9, with 4:29 left to play in the third quarter. The Catamounts responded with a 5-0 run that included two goals in the third quarter and three in the fourth.
Penn State goes on the road for the first time this season when it travels to play Saint Joseph's on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The Hawks are 1-1 with a 12-11 win over St. Bonaventure and a 12-11 loss to No. 14 Delaware.
