UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's volleyball program and head coach Mark Pavlik have announced the hiring of assistant coach Pat Shawaryn to round out the Nittany Lions' coaching staff.
Shawaryn (Shwar-in) joins Penn State after a stint as Princeton men's volleyball assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from 2017-22, where he helped develop the Tigers into one of the top programs in the EIVA.
"We are excited to welcome a Pennsylvania volleyball product to our staff," said Pavlik. "Pat brings great experience with every facet of the men's game which will no doubt benefit our program. Colin [McMillan] and I look forward to working with Pat!"
Shawaryn was an integral asset to the Tigers' 2019 EIVA Tournament championship team, the first Tigers team to capture a title in 21 seasons. The Tigers also went on to win their first NCAA Tournament contest that year.
Prior to Princeton, the Lancaster, Pa. native had a very successful tenure as both the head coach and assistant coach at his alma mater, Juniata College, from 2011-16. He was named the 2013 AVCA Division III men's volleyball national assistant coach of the year before taking over as head coach in 2014.
The Eagles had a 47-23 record in his three seasons at the helm, which included a pair of conference titles, an appearance in the 2014 national championship match and rosters featuring five All-America honorees.
Shawaryn has also been heavily involved within the USA Volleyball coaching pipeline for several years in various roles, including his most recent position as an assistant coach for the 2021 U21 National Training Team.
As a student-athlete at Juniata, Shawaryn won the 2004 Molten Division III national championship with the Eagles as the squad's libero. Shawaryn is a graduate of Hempfield High School.
