Penn State Swimming’s Schobel Set to Swim at NCAAs

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The 2022 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships begin tomorrow evening in Atlanta, Georgia at the McAuley Aquatic Center. Penn State swimming's Marie Schobel will compete on Friday and Saturday in the 100 and 200 backstroke. 
 
Every day, prelims and finals begin at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
 
The senior enters the meet seeded 31st in the 100 back. Her time of 52.22 makes her Penn State's second fastest 100 backstroker ever and is three one-hundredths of a second off the school record set by Mackenzie Powers in 2014.
 
Schobel will also compete in the 200 backstroke, she is ranked 43rd with a time of 1:54.37.  
                                        
The Nittany Lion began her post season at the B1G Ten Championships by placing in the top-10 for the third consecutive year in the 100 backstroke. Her time of 52.48 earned her sixth this year, while in 2021 and 2020 she swam to sixth (53.11) and ninth (52.98). 
 
During the same meet in the 200 back, she improved on her lifetime best as Penn State's third fastest swimmer in the event (1:54.37). 
 
Schobel will face the top collegiate backstroke swimmers at the meet, including Olympic silver medalist Regan Smith. 
 
The 2022 championships mark Schobel's second appearance at the NCAAs. At last year's meet, she competed in the 100 and 200 back and finished 22nd (52.66) and 39th (1:56.17).
 
Schobel also qualified for the 2020 NCAA Championships in the 100 backstroke but was not able to attend since the championships were cancelled due to COVID-19.
