Johnson Named Big Ten Freshman of the Year

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday that Penn State track & field freshman Allison Johnson has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

Johnson complied a historic first season for the Nittnay Lions, setting the Penn State program record in the 800m run (2:02.84) while also recording the second fastest mile (4:37.44) and 1000m run (2:43.12) in Penn State history. Johnson became the sixth straight Nittany Lion to claim the Big Ten Indoor 800m Championship when she claimed gold at the conference meet in February. She also qualified to compete at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships and was named a Second Team All-American.

Penn State athletes have now claimed Big Ten Freshman of the Year awards in four of the past six seasons, with Victoria Vanriele winning the award last year.

The Nittany Lions are set to begin their outdoor campaign this weekend when the team travels to Philadelphia for the Penn Invite on March 19.
