Women’s Fencing Fares Well at Day One of NCAA Championships

University Park, Pa. - Rounds one through three of the NCAA championships for women concluded today in Notre Dame, Ind. Competitions for women will resume tomorrow with final champions being announced at the end of the day.

In women's epee, Kateryna Chorniy (Kyiv, Ukraine) stands in fourth place with a 0.667 percentage. Axelle Wasiak (Vlaams-Brabant, Belgium) finished day one in 15th place with a 0.467 percentage.

Samantha Catantan (Quezon City, Philippines) finished in seventh in women's foil with a 0.667 percentage.

Finally, Ola Strzalkowski (Littleton, Colo.) finished in eighth place with a 0.600 percentage in women's saber followed by Pauline Conscience (Paris, France) who finished in 14th place with a 0.533 percentage.

As a team Penn State sits in sixth place as the competitions continue. After the women's championships wrap up tomorrow, the men's championships will begin Saturday and Sunday.

​​Penn State has won 13 combined NCAA Championships in its storied history and three women's titles before the championship became a combined event. The Nittany Lions finished second last year as Penn State hosted the NCAA Championships in the Bryce Jordan Center. Griffiths claimed the NCAA individual title in the epee to lead Penn State. Penn State had 10 All-Americans a year ago.
