UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.— The Penn State women's tennis team fell 4-1 in a close contest with the No. 26 Michigan Wolverines on Sunday afternoon.
"I thought there were a lot of positives from today's match," said assistant Coach Ronit Parker. "We came out strong in doubles and took an early lead going into singles. The team fought hard in singles but unfortunately came up short in some big moments. We are improving day by day and look forward to the weekend ahead. This team has a lot to look forward to as there are many opportunities still to come this season. I truly believe the best is yet to come."
Doubles
Penn State secured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three.
On court No. 2, duo Yvonne Zuffova and Olivia Ryan picked up their fourth-straight doubles win with a victory over Anca Craciun and Kari Miller, 6-2. The win tied the doubles point up at one after the Nittany Lions fell on court No. 1, 6-3.
The decision for the doubles point came on court No. 3, where Gabby O'Gorman and Alexandra Nielsen defeated Gala Mesochoritou and Julia Fliegner 6-3 to give Penn State an early 1-0 lead in the match.
Singles
The Wolverines swept the courts in singles play, earning wins over the Nittany Lions on courts one, two, four and five. The Nittany Lions fought hard though, forcing three sets in two of the singles matches and a tiebreaker in the first set of another.
Sofiya Chekhlystova held No. 11 Kari Miller to a fierce three set- match in bout No. 1. Chekhlystova dropped the first set to Miller, 6-3, rebounded for a 6-4 win in the second set but fell in the third 6-1.
