EUGENE, Oregon – Penn State track and field alumnus Joe Kovacs ('11) secured his six major international competition medal for the United States with a silver medal in the men's shot put competition at the 2022 World Athletics Championships at the University of Oregon's Heyward Field Sunday evening,
Kovacs' top throw came in at 22.89 meters (75-1), a season best, on his fourth throw of the finals. Kovacs topped Group B in Friday's qualifying round to throw in Sunday's final.
The silver medal is Kovacs' fourth at a World Championship competition, with his latest being his gold medal in 2019. He also won gold in 2015 and silver in 2017. Kovacs' fantastic career in international competition also includes a pair of Olympic silver medals in 2016 and 2020.
The United States swept the shot put podium for the first time as Ryan Krauser won gold with a 22.91m throw and Josh Awotunde earned bronze at 22.29m.
