No. 10 Penn State travels to Monmouth

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 10 Penn State women's soccer program hits the road for its first of three away matches as the Nittany Lions take on Monmouth at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

 PENN STATE BREAKDOWN

LAST TIME OUT

  • No. 10 Penn State blanked No. 21 West Virginia 2-0 in the Nittany Lions' second straight shutout.
  • It marked back-to-back wins against WVU as PSU beat the Mountaineers 2-0 last season as well.
  • Sophomore Mieke Schiemann had a standout performance, notching her first career goal and first career assist.
  • PSU's first goal was scored by Jordan Canniff in the 57th minute assisted by Payton Linnehan and Schiemann.
  • Schiemann gave the Lions' the 2-0 advantage by heading the ball in off a corner kick from Penelope Hocking.
  • Penn State's defense limited WVU to just nine shots as keeper redshirt senior Katherine Asman earned her second-straight clean sheet.  
  • With two minutes remaining in the match, Asman ran up to make a save on a free running attacker to help preserve the shutout.

 SCOUTING MONMOUTH 

  • The Hawks are 3-0 after clenching their third straight shutout against Farleigh Dickinson on Thursday 
  • Monmouth has also shut out Lehigh and UAlbany
  • This is the second season that Hawks have opened with three consecutive shutouts 
  • Freshman forward Summer Reimet tallied the first two goals of her career 
  • Graduate student forward Lauren Karabin found the back of the net; the 19th of her career.

 PENN STATE AGAINST MONMOUTH 

  • Penn State leads the series 3-0 versus Monmouth dating back to 2007 with all matches occurring in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Jeffrey Field.
  • The Nittany Lions won 4-0 in their first match versus the Hawks on Nov. 16, 2007. Current USWNT goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher had three saves in goal as a sophomore in the clean sheet performance.
  • The second matchup resulted in a 3-0 PSU win on Nov. 15, 2013. 
  • Most recently, Penn State beat Monmouth 3-1 on Nov. 12. 2021 in the NCAA Tournament First Round. It was PSU's 27th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and the team advanced to the Sweet 16 for the fifth straight season.
  • PSU returners Ally Schlegel, Payton Linnehan and Rachel Wasserman scored in last year's match. 

NEXT TIME OUT

  • The Nittany Lions remain on the road and head to the West Coast to take on Stanford on Sept. 1 and Santa Clara on Sept. 4.
