No. 8 Penn State Visits No. 12 Stanford, Santa Clara

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 8 Penn State women's soccer program heads to the West Coast this week for matches with No. 12 Stanford on Thursday, Sept. 1 and Santa Clara on Sunday, Sept. 4. 
 
The last time the Nittany Lions faced both Bay Area teams in the same season was in 2015, the year Penn State won the national championship.

LAST TIME OUT

  • No. 10 PSU won their first road match 3-1 at Monmouth and delivered the Hawks their first loss of the season on Sunday, Aug. 28.
  • Schlegel scored her 37th career goal and notched her 91st career point.
  • Sophomore Mieke Schiemann scored the game-winner, her second career goal after tallying her first career goal and assist vs. No. 21 West Virginia on Aug. 25.
  • Senior+ Penelope Hocking topped off the match by scoring her first goal as a Nittany Lion
  • The Blue and White out-shot the Hawks 17 to 7 and had nine shots on goal to the Hawks' four. 
  • Schiemann's career performance earned her a trio of weekly honors including Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, College Soccer News Women's National Team of the Week and Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week. 

SCOUTING STANFORD 

  • The Cardinal is 3-0 with wins against Sacramento State (5-0), San Francisco (3-0) and UC Santa Barbara (5-1).
  • Stanford leads the nation in shots on goal per game with 14.67. They are third in shots per game, averaging 26.3.
  • The team was tabbed as the Pac-12 favorites in the league's pre-season poll.
  • Senior Maya Doms was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.
  • Three Cardinal lead with three goals each in freshman Lumi Kostmayer and juniors Samantha Williams and Amy Sayer.
  • Junior goalie Ryan Campbell holds a .800 save percentage and has allowed one goal.
  • Coaching Stanford since 1998, Paul Ratcliffe has led the Cardinal to the NCAA tournament in all but one season as head coach.
  • The Cardinal went 13-6-1 overall in 2021, including 7-3-1 in the Pac-12 to place fourth. Stanford made its 30th NCAA Tournament appearance overall, losing 0-1 to Santa Clara in the first round. 

PENN STATE AGAINST STANFORD

  • Penn State is 1-5 against Stanford all-time, meeting for the first time in 2011.
  • In 2015, The No. 7 Nittany Lions handed No. 2 Stanford a 2-0 loss in Palo, Alto, Calif. The win was the first for PSU over Stanford and it marked the first two-goal loss at home for Stanford since November 23, 2007.
  • In 2019, PSU hosted the Cardinal in their home opener, falling 1-2. Kate Wiesner scored her first career goal as a freshman in that match.
  • In the Cardinal and Nittany Lions' last matchup in 2019, PSU fell 0-2 in the Sweet 16 as Stanford advanced and would win the national title.

SCOUTING SANTA CLARA 

  • The Broncos are 1-3 after winning their season opener 1-0 at San Jose State but have since been shutout in three straight matches to UC Davis (1-0), No. 7 Texas Christian (7-0) and No. 6 UCLA (1-0).
  • Sophomore Izzy D'Aquila has scored the lone goal for the Broncos and leads the team with 13 shots.
  • Goalkeeping has been split between freshmen Kylie Foutch and Felicity Baker.
  • Santa Clara ranked No. 5 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll but have since fallen out of the rankings.
  • Last season, the Broncos made their second consecutive trip to the College Cup but fell to Brigham Young in a penalty kick shootout.
  • A total of eight players finished their collegiate careers after last season, including All-Americans Kelsey Turnbow and Alex Loera. 
  • Head coach Jerry Smith is in his 36th season at the helm of the program. He led the team to the national championship title in 2020.

PENN STATE AGAINST SANTA CLARA

  • The Nittany Lions are 2-1-1 against the Broncos all-time since their first meeting in 1996.
  • PSU won its last match with the Broncos 1-0 as Mallory Weber scored the game-winner in 2015, the year Penn State won the national championship.
  • In 2005, PSU advanced to their third College Cup in program history with a 2-1 win in the NCAA quarterfinals against No. 2 seed Santa Clara.

NEXT TIME OUT

  • The Nittany Lions return home after a three-match road trip to host Liberty at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8.
