STATE COLLEGE – Penn State swimmers William Lulek and Daniel Raisanen are set to compete for Sweden in the 2022 European Aquatics Championships in Rome on Friday, Aug. 11-Wednesday, Aug. 17. Austin Pillado joins Lulek and Raisanen as an assistant coach for the Swedish squad.
Lulek will compete in three individual events, the 200 and 400 Individual Medley and 200 Breast. Raisanen will be in the 100 and 200 Breast and medley relays.
The pair earned their spots from their performances at the Swedish National Meet from June 29-July 3. Lulek swept the IM events, placing first in both the 200 and 400, in addition to a victory in the 200 Back and a second in the 200 Breast. The graduate student placed first in the 400 IM (4:24.73) and first in the 200 IM in a time that earned him a second PR (2:03.25).
Raisanen swept the 50, 100 and 200 Breast, earning personal records (PRs) alongside gold medals in each event. The returning senior swam to a championship meet record in the 100 (1:00.36), two seconds faster than his previous best and only 0.28 off the Swedish National Record. He qualified for the European Championships in the 200 by six tenths of a second (2:11.63), a four-second PR.
