Clifford Earns Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State redshirt senior Sean Clifford was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. Clifford tallied five total touchdowns to lead Penn State to a 35-31 win at Purdue to open the 2022 season.
 
Clifford earned his third career Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honor. He was also Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on September 27, 2021 and September 27, 2019.

Clifford shared this week's honor with Nebraska running back Anthony Grant.

  • Completed 20-of-37 passes for 282 yards and a career-high-tying four touchdowns.
  • Added a 2-yard rushing touchdown to give him five total touchdowns.
  • With 282 passing yards, Clifford became the third Penn State quarterback to surpass the 8,000-career passing yard mark, joining Trace McSorley (9,899; 2015-18) and Christian Hackenberg (8,457; 2013-15). Clifford now has 8,121 passing yards.
  • With 284 total yards (282 passing; 2 rushing), Clifford surpassed the 9,000-career total yard mark. He now has 9,020 total yards (8,121 passing; 899 rushing).
  • The redshirt senior became the third Penn State quarterback to start a game in four different seasons, joining Tony Sacca (1988-92) and Zack Mills (2001-04).
  • Clifford connected on a 12-yard touchdown with Mitchell Tinsley and a 67-yard touchdown with Brenton Strange in the second quarter. He threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to KeAndre Lambert-Smith and a 10-yard touchdown pass to Keyvone Lee in the fourth quarter.
  • With two touchdown passes in the second quarter and two in the fourth quarter, Clifford now has 11 career multi-touchdown quarters and 18 career multi-touchdown halves.
  • Clifford secured his 27th career multi-touchdown pass game, 13th game with three touchdown passes and fourth game with four touchdown passes.
  • The redshirt senior scored on 2-yard QB sneak in the second quarter, his 11th career rushing touchdown.
  • With 11 career rushing touchdowns, Clifford is tied for fifth all-time at Penn State with Zack Mills (2001-04) for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.
  • Clifford recorded his eighth career game with both a passing and rushing touchdown.
  • Clifford earned his ninth career game with 250+ passing yards and 3+ passing touchdowns.
  • Clifford notched his 20th career 200-yard passing game.
  • He currently sits as the all-time leader at Penn State in completion percentage (.602), while ranking second at PSU in passing touchdowns (66), third in passing yards (8,121), completions (627) and passing efficiency (141.7).
  • Is represented on the Davey O'Brien Award, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, Manning Award, Maxwell Award, Reese's Senior Bowl, Walter Camp Player of the Year and Wuerffel Trophy watch lists.
