ROSEMONT, Ill. – Following a four-point week and series sweep of Mercyhurst, sophomore Ben Schoen (Maumee, Ohio) was named the B1G Hockey First Star of the Week as announced by the league office Tuesday morning.
Schoen paced the Nittany Lions with four points over the weekend with one goal and three assists. The sophomore tied his career-high with three points on one goal and two assists during a 6-3 victory on Thursday night before adding another assist on the eventual game-winning goal in a 4-1 win on Friday.
The Maumee, Ohio native also had a plus/minus of plus-4 and went 14-for-22 (63.6 percent) on faceoffs over the two-game sweep of the Lakers. Schoen's six points this season are currently tied for fourth in the Big Ten while his five assists are tied for second in the conference and seventh in the nation.
Schoen has registered at least one point in all four games to open the season after notching a point in his final three contests of the 2021-22 campaign for a career-long seven-game point streak. This marks the first time in his career he has received a weekly award and the first Penn State First Star of the Week since Clayton Phillips '22 earned that accolade on November 2, 2021.
Penn State is 4-0-0 to begin the season for just the second time in program history dating back to a 6-0-0 start to the 2018-19 campaign.
The Nittany Lions are back in action this week as they welcome the St. Thomas Tommies to Pegula Ice Arena for a pair of games on Thursday and Friday evening at 7 p.m.
