Penn State Defeats Michigan 3-2 in Final Regular Season Game

ANN ARBOR, Mich.- Van Danielson and Andrew Privett lift Penn State to a 3-2 victory against Michigan. 
 
The Nittany Lions finish the regular season as the fifth seed going into the Big Ten Tournament.
 
FIRST HALF
The Wolverines got on the board first in the fourth minute of the game using a corner kick. Nolan Miller headed the ball in off a pass from the corner.
 
The Nittany Lions could not connect to convert a point through the first half. Despite two set piece opportunities in the last few minutes, Penn State came out with no goal to show and the the Wolverines remained in the lead going into halftime.
 
SECOND HALF
Penn State came into the second period fired up. The Nittany Lions got on the board less than two minutes in, with a goal from Van Danielson. He battled the Michigan defender to get the ball back in his possession and moved towards the goal and placed it in the bottom right corner.
 
Danielson was on fire when he added another in the 53rd minute. Alex Stevenson dribbled the ball down the field and crossed it from the right side into the box. Danielson used his head to put it past the Wolverines goalkeeper.
 
The score quickly moved to 2-1, with Penn State in the lead.
 
Michigan responded less than two minutes later with another goal off a corner kick. Miller scored his second of the game off the set piece, tying the score at 2-2.
 
The Nittany Lions were not finished. They maintained possession on Michigan's half of the field and created a crucial drive in the 74th minute. After passing the ball around the Wolverines' box, Matthew Henderson crossed the ball to Andrew Privett on the right. Privett volleyed the ball into the net in a bang-bang play. The score moved to 3-2.
 
Despite a last second chance for Michigan in the final 10 seconds, the Nittany Lions came away with a 3-2 win.
 
OF NOTE

  • Danielson scored his third and fourth goal of the season.
  • He becomes the third Nittany Lion to have a multi-goal game this season. 
  • Privett scored his second goal of the season and 14th of his career.

The Nittany Lions begin the postseason in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Friday, Nov. 4. Their opponent will be decided after the Big Ten games conclude today.
