MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Penn State women's tennis team kicked off day one of competition at the Martha Thorn Invitational hosted by West Virginia. The Nittany Lions will continue play in the tournament on Saturday, Oct. 8.
Singles
Each of the Blue and White's singles players competed against West Virginia.
Karly Friedland defeated Momoko Nagato 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-5.
Ioana Gheorghita fell to Ting-Pei Chang 6-3, 6-4.
Alina Lebedeva was unsuccessful against Kendall Kovick 6-2, 6-3.
Doubles
Ioana Gheorghita and Karly Friedland lost their match to Momoko Nagato and Michaela Kucharova of West Virginia 6-1. The duo also fell to Andrea Di Palma and Chunxi Xin of Louisville 7-5.
Alina Lebedeva competed alongside Hayley Glen of JMU. The pair gave a tough fight, but ultimately lost to Kendall Kovick and Tatiana Lipatova of West Virginia 7-6 (7-5). Lebedeva and Glen were unsuccessful to Sasha Gorchanyuk and Tyra Richardson of Louisville 6-2.
