UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Two highly-accomplished golfers have signed National Letters of Intent to join head coach Greg Nye and the Penn State men's golf team during the November signing period. Robby O'Regan and Zachary Smith will join the program as the Class of 2027.
Robby O'Regan
Northbrook, Ill. | Glenbrook North High School
O'Regan will come to Happy Valley following a standout junior and high school career as a four-year starter at Glenbrook North High School.
O'Regan collected several top-10 finishes on the junior circuit in 2022, including a first-place finish in the MAJGT at Oak Meadows in June. He finished tied for fourth at the Illinois State Junior Amateur and third in Chick Evan's Junior Amateur Match Play. O'Regan tied for seventh in the AJGA Detroit Junior and tied for ninth at both the AJGA Stan Utley and AJGA Renewal by Anderson DA Points. He earned all-state, all-conference, all-regional and all-sectional honors during his high school season, finishing tied for 10th in the state tournament.
The Northbrook, Ill. Native led Glenbrook to the team state championship as a sophomore, finishing tied for sixth in the high school sectional tournament. He also finished tied for fourth in the MAJFT at Oak Meadows in 2021. During his 2020 season, O'Regan finished tied for fourth in the high school sectional tournament and tied for eighth in the AJGA Junior All-Star at Urbana tournament.
Zachary Smith
Brampton, Ontario | Mississauga Secondary School
Smith will come to Penn State from Brampton, Ontario, where he's put together a stellar career at Mississauga Secondary School.
Smith was crowned the champion at both the Golf Ontario Tour Championship and HJGT at Penn State in 2022. A two-year member of Team Ontario in 2021 and 2022, he tied for fifth at the 2022 Junior Spring Classic, tied for 15th at the 2022 Ontario Amateur and tied for 17th at the Optimist International and Ontario Junior.
Smith placed tied for seventh at both the 2021 Canadian Juvenile U-17 and Ontario Junior U-19 Championships, and finished tied for third at the 2021 Ontario Juvenile U-17 Championship.
Smith is a former three-sport athlete, also playing hockey and lacrosse.
O'Regan and Smith will enroll at Penn State ahead of the 2023-24 season.
