Nittany Lions Set for Big Ten Quarterfinals Match at Indiana on Friday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- Penn State men's soccer will take on its first postseason game at Indiana on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7:00 p.m. The Nittany Lions enter the tournament as the five seed and Indiana as the four. 
 
Penn State looks to clench the conference tournament championship title for the second year in a row, starting in the quarterfinals this Friday.

Last Time Out

  • Penn State won its final regular season game 3-2 against Michigan on Sunday.
  • The Wolverines got on the board first with a goal in the first half, leaving the Nittany Lions trailing 1-0 at halftime. 
  • Van Danielson came into the second half with fire, scoring one goal just two minutes in, and a second under 10 minutes later.
  • Danielson scored his first goal after winning the ball back from a Michigan defender and put it past the keeper. Alex Stevenson assisted his second goal, crossing the ball in the air to Danielson who headed it to the back of the net. 
  • Michigan added another to the board minutes later, to tie the score once again at 2-2.
  • Andrew Privett scored the game-winning goal off a cross from Matthew Henderson. Privett volleyed the ball in the net in a bang-bang play.

Nittany Lions to Watch

  • Danielson was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week this week after his multi-goal performance on Sunday. He joins Peter Mangione and Liam Butts in being one of three Nittany Lions with multi-goal outings this season.
  • Mangione is ranked second in the conference in goals (8) and is tied for third in points (18).
  • Butts was on a three-game scoring streak, scoring four goals in three games, totaling 22 in his career. He leads the Big Ten in game-winning goals (3), ranks third in goals (7) and fourth in points (17).
  • Kris Shakes ranks third in the conference in saves percentage (.728).
  • Van Danielson and Ben Liscum have scored their first career goals at forward in Big Ten matches.

Nittany Lions vs. Hoosiers Most Recent

  • The Nittany Lions lost on the road at Indiana in the regular season just three weeks ago. The final score was 4-2.
  • Butts scored the first goal for Penn State to tie the score at 1-1. Seth Kuhn crossed the ball through the middle and Butts beat the Hoosiers keeper to the ball and pushed it past him to place it in the goal.
  • Indiana added three goals before, Peter Mangione was awarded a penalty kick and added one more for the Nittany Lions.
  • Last season, the Hoosiers won the regular season game between the two teams, but Penn State defeated Indiana 3-0 in the Big Ten Tournament Championship.
  • This will be the teams' 16th postseason match up in the Big Ten Tournament. 

Scouting Indiana

  • Indiana's last regular season game ended in a 1-1 draw with Maryland, to allow the Terps to win the regular season Big Ten title.
  • Redshirt-senior Ryan Wittenbrink was selected to College Soccer News' National Team of the Week, was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, and was a Top Drawer Soccer Honorable mention after the Hoosiers 4-2 victory against the Nittany Lions on Oct. 14. He scored two of the four goals in the game. Wittenbrink is tied for third in the Big Ten in goals (7), is third in shots (37) and is second in points (20).
  • Indiana ranks second in the conference in goals (32) and points (99).
  • The Hoosiers received five votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches Poll.
