UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State women's basketball (7-1) could not overcome a slow start as the Lady Lions fell 89-68 in their first loss of the season to Virginia (9-0) Wednesday in the ACC/B1G Challenge at the Bryce Jordan Center.
 
Cold shooting had the Lady Lions behind by as much as 15 in the first quarter. The opening of the second quarter saw Virginia extend their lead to 19 points, but Penn State found life with a 7-0 run sparked by an Alli Campbell three-pointer.

Midway through the second period, Shay Ciezki drained back-to-back treys to cut the deficit to 11 points. Penn State trailed Virginia 44-28 at the half, but the Cavaliers pushed their lead back to 20 going into the fourth quarter.

NOTES

  • Penn finishes tied for the fourth-best start in program history (1996-97).
  • The loss also ended the Lady Lions' streak of 14 straight home nonconference wins, fourth longest in school history.
  • With a team-high 16 points, Makenna Marisa has 64 double digit scoring games in her career.
  • Ciezki's 11 points has her in double digit scoring in four of eight games as a freshman.
  • Kapinus' three steals marks her fifth game with at least three swipes.
