UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) has honored Penn State as the Mideast Region Coaching Staff of the Year. The honor is voted on by the NFHCA's membership. Nittany Lion head coach Char Morett-Curtiss, associate head coach Lisa Bervinchak-Love and assistant coach Laura Gebhart have earned the honor for Penn State.
Morett-Curtiss recently wrapped up her 36th season as head coach at Penn State and her 39th overall. Penn State ended the season with a 17-4 overall record. The Nittany Lions were 2022 Big Ten Co-Champions as well with a 7-1 record in conference games. The Lions won their first two NCAA tournament games to advance to the NCAA semifinals for the first time since 2007. Morett-Curtiss is 541-223-8 at Penn State (35 years) and 575-239-16 (38 years, including three at Boston College) overall. She was the 2022 Big Ten Coach of the Year.
Bervinchak-Love, associate head coach, recently completed her 29th season on the Penn State staff. Bervinchak-Love is a 1989 graduate of Penn State, having played for Morett-Curtiss as a Nittany Lion. In May of 2015, she was inducted into the Susquehanna Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. She was an All-American player during year years on the field as a Nittany Lion.
Gebhart is in her second season as an assistant coach at Penn State. She came to Penn State after serving as head coach at Bryant University, where she began her coaching career as an assistant. Gebhart is s 2015 Penn State graduate and was a four-time first team All-Big Ten honoree as well as a four-time All-American (earning first team laurels in 2014).
This year's Penn State staff led a team that garnered the NFHCA Mideast Regional Player of the Year, seven All-Region picks, the NCAA's Elite 90 Award winner, the Big Ten Player of the Year, the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and five All-Big Ten selections.
